CLUB HISTORY

Gustave Fritz Schreiner was deeded this land by his father, Captain Charles Schreiner. Mr. Gus and his new bride, Miss Huldah, built this mansion at the turn of the century.

In 1898-99 they moved to "Cedar Crest", on Bandera Road, which is now the Riverhill Country Club Clubhouse. The basement, complete with wine cellar and vault, plus the first floor, served them sufficiently for a few years, until they decided to add a second floor which was completed in 1916. It consisted of bedroom, sleeping porch, sitting room and guest rooms. After a few years this became inadequate for their way of life, so they added the third floor, a ballroom, which was finished in 1920. The beautiful beveled, leaded engraved windows located in the Clubhouse, were imported from France.

The honeysuckle creeping over the rock walls clearly reflects living evidence of their interest in flowers and gardens. The huge oak tree, encircled by flowers at the entrance to the Club area is over two hundred years old and was special tree to Mr. Gus.

The land of the present Riverhill golf course is approximately the same acreage deeded to Mr. Gus on September 3, 1907. Prior to present ownership of Riverhill, there were numerous owners. The land extends to the Guadalupe River, the State Park, Highway 16 and the Real Ranch.

Mr. Gus loved entertaining and held numerous parties and dances, and there are still old timers around who remember the lovely music of the old vitriola on the third floor.
Life was slow...elegant....refined. That exquisite style of living, born in the quiet simplicity of the Texas Hill Country, has not been destroyed by time. It has in fact, been restored.

In the spring of 1973, Stuart and Sherman Hunt of Dallas purchased the 1100 acres and with the assistance of Byron Nelson and Chris Schenkel, began the long process of creating Riverhill. Its operation as a private club began in the fall of 1974 with the opening of the 18-hole championship golf course built by Byron Nelson. Byron Nelson remained closely associated with Riverhill as golf course consultant as well as homeowner. He and Mrs. Nelsoned own a residence on the 10th Fairway.

The Hill Country weather complements the beauty of Riverhill. The Rockerfeller Foundation determined that "...the area within 100 miles radius of Kerrville, Texas is the most ideal climate in the United States." With its fine dining facilities, cottages, tennis courts, and swimming pool, Riverhill is a prime spot for vacation or permanent residence.

To make this picture complete, one vital ingredient is necessary...time. One must have time to enjoy the leisurely luxuries Riverhill has to offer...golf, tennis, swimming, dining, relaxation.

Riverhill's unique appeal will reach out to people everywhere who have an appreciation of relaxed living in a class environment consisting of genuine people.

Riverhill Country Club became a member-owned country club on September 2, 1986. Since that time we have enjoyed a growth in equity membership and numerous improvements have been completed. We are looking forward to on-going improvements and continued growth.
